Book review- The curse of Damini

image

The curse of Damini’ is Debajani Mohanty’s maiden novel. The book revolves around Renuka Pal, a fifteen years old, young, free-spirited, exuberant girl with a rational approach towards everything. She gets married to Shashank Shekhar, who belongs to one of the most influential zamindars of Bengal. Her husband is open-minded and miles away from any debauchery and loves her extremely, which is like a cherry on the cake. But, there is always a flip side to everything. Renuka gradually discovers that Shashank’s family is suffering from a curse casted on them centuries ago. Damini wants to take revenge for the injustice inflicted on her by the ancestors of Shashank. And she will not rest in peace untill her thirst for the blood is satiated. She is waiting impatiently for her next target.
But Renuka won’t subjugate herself and she decides to fight this unseen enemy. She sets out on a journey to make up for all the injustice done by her in-laws on the poor people for centuries. Set against the backdrop of Bengal during the time of Independence, it gives an in-depth knowledge of the lifestyle and mentality of traditional Bengal families. It also shows the darker side of British rule and partition. It also carries a strong social message and depicts the picture of how females have to suffer in the patriarchal society. This book can also be seen as a motivation for them to rise and shine against all odds and atrocities.
All the characters in this novel are well-developed and complement the story nicely.
Debajani Mohanty’ storytelling skill is commendable. And she will clearly achieve great success as a writer. The Curse of Damini stands testimonial to this fact. This books is so engrossing and enthralling that it keeps you strung-out till the end. The suspense is perfectly maintained and the ending is excellent with a beautiful message.
This book is a must-read for the people who love thriller and suspense!

Happiness!!

image

‘Happiness’ is such an easy word to utter but not so easy feeling to attain. Happiness is a very essential element of life. If people are not happy, it naturally implies that they are sad. And if sadness is prolonged, it culminates into depression, making a person suicidal. So, you see, not being happy can be fatal, at times.
The state of elation should be one of the basic necessities of our life. A happy man has a desire to live. No one has ever heard of a happy person committing suicide! Hence, one should make sure that they remain cheerful and frolicsome in every situation. But, it is easier said than done. Happiness is ubiquitous but whether we let it seep into our mind and heart depends on us. I always wondered  why my state of happiness was always short-lived. Why  I couldn’t be happy all the time??The duration of my happiness was so fugacious that I used to dread being profoundly happy. Because immediately after this blissful and beauteous feeling of happiness it used to be difficult for me to get accustomed to the usual feeling of sorrow and melancholy. It’s like a cycle. Happiness and sorrow follow each other just like day and night do. Swami Vivekananda has aptly said – ‘Happiness presents itself before man wearing a crown of sorrow on its head. He who welcomes it must also welcome sorrow.’ But in my case, happiness infiltrated in my life only to drop sorrow and then vamoosed.

image

But lately I have realized the fault in my conduct. It wasn’t the departure of happiness which used to make me sad but the departure of that one person with whom I used to attach my happiness. I realized that people become sad because we attach our happiness with other living beings and not with ourselves and with our state of mind. We all can be happy forever if we learn to love ourselves and value our own company. Someone’s existence should never be our reason to be happy. Because people are temporary. Not everyone we meet are meant to stay in our lives. So, it will not be prudent to attach our happiness with them.  A person who has understood this secret can never be sad again.
And also we need to learn to curb our endless human desires and be content and satisfied with whatever we have been accorded. Satisfaction is another key to remain happy. We need to stop comparing ourselves and our assets with others. People who say ‘Grass is greener on the other side’ were too busy to notice other people’s grass to water their own.
So lets make happiness the permanent state of mind. Lets have empathy, elation, encouragement, enthusiasm the four essential e’s of our life and cheerfulness be always on our guard. Long live  the happiness:)

Splitsville!

image

Today, I woke up to the news of another celebrity couple heading for splitsville. And it’s none other than our very own ‘Brangelina’! I just surreptitiously wish that this report by International Business Times is false. This news came as a shock because Angelina and Brad Pitt have given us many relationship goals and they were (almost) inseparable. But my faith in ‘forever’has already been shaken by some appalling breakups back home.

image

It’s just three months into this year and we have already seen so many celebrity breakups. It appears that ‘estrangement’ has become a new fad. 2016, you are not giving me any reasons to rejoice *sigh*. The year started with the disturbing news of Ranbir and Katrina’s break up. Their breakup reminded me of a conversation which I had with my friend, Amrita, who had told me that there  can be some developments (positive or negative) in their propinquity just to hike the buzz around ‘Jagga jasoos’. What a clairvoyance, Amrita!

image

We had not even fully-recovered from this news that bam came the news of Virat and Anushka’s relationship biting the dust. Now this one terribly broke my heart. They were the sweetest duo and the recent news of Virat still standing for his ex makes my heart pray earnestly for their reconciliation. Farhan and Adhuna have also called time on their marriage of sixteen years but very gracefully. Maybe Karisma and Sanjay Kapur can learn a thing or two from them. And stop washing their dirty linen in public.

image

The greatest irony was the news of trouble in the paradise of Malaika and Arbaaz Khan as soon as they came together on the silver screen to host ‘Power Couple’. Alas! Their love didn’t have enough power to obviate their severance. The ‘Khan’daan is famous for its ‘Hum saath saath hai’ family values. But the unbreakable family bond is at risk! Acording to some reports, even Sohail and Seema are following the suit. And Huma Qureshi is being blamed for this. Poor Huma, she is in the news more for her involvement in espousal troubles than her career. Remember her role in Kalki and Anurag Kashyap’s divorce?

image

There are also rumours of Ankita and Sushant’s seperation but Ankita has now rubbished such news. Nice publicity stunt! They got some limelight after all. Last year, the entire nation was shocked when Hrithik and Suzanne parted ways. They were our desi ‘Brangelina’. Everyone wanted a love-story like theirs, well not any more! Even the media had adored them and called their affair as ‘fairytale romance’. But even this fairy tale affair came to an unexpected and abrupt end. Selena Gomez has rightly said in one of her songs that there are no happy endings in modern fairytales.
All these unhappy endings are making youngsters lose faith in long-lasting relationships as we consider these celebrities as our role models. Their personal lives are served as fodder to the masses by the media and hence we are aware of all the gory details of their lives. Hence, it becomes even more strenuous for them to handle their personal affairs.
I really hope we don’t get to hear more of such depressing and heartbreaking news. Because,
To meet and part, gives sorrow the heart!

Love And Lust

image

In the middle of the flight, Kiara woke up to go to the washroom. When she returned she was too lazy to push her way into the middle seat. And with Rishaan readily offering to shift seats, the seating arrangement changed. With 20 minutes still remaining for the flight to land, a sleep starved Kiara took another power nap, this time holding Rishaan’s right hand more firmly. Rishaan’s other hand though, nervously moved to touch Diya’s. Her heart skipped a beat. Diya pulled her hand away. But a defiant Rishaan held her wrist again, this time firmly and more reassuringly. The changing behavioural dynamics between the three perhaps gave out a foreboding of what was to come in Goa. When the flight landed at the Dabolim Airport, Rishaan felt uncanny… his excitement seemed replaced by an unknown fear that he found very difficult to decipher.

Kiara’s dad had arranged perfectly for the trip. He, himself showed keen interest in all the minute details and planned the trip. Though this wasn’t the first time he had planned a trip for anyone, but this was the first time his daughter had come on a vacation with her boyfriend.  And if Mr. Raheja couldn’t bring a smile on his daughter’s face then his mammoth Raheja group of hotels empire was  futile. The driver was waiting for them at the arrivals and they headed for the Raheja Hotels in lavish BMW M series. These arrangements made Rishaan forget about all the worries and his unknown fear. Rishaan and Kiara had got the empire suite at the top floor and Diya’s suite was adjacent to them. ‘Don’t worry Diya, we will find a guy for you in Goa.’ chuckled Kiara. Diya just smiled and went into her suite.

In the evening Kiara planned for the dinner at Hotel Calangute Towers near Calangute beach. ‘Rishaan, dad always tells me its good to go and dine at other hotels to know where we stand and we can always learn a thing or two and improve our methods. And this is the reason  Raheja group of  hotels is now a big name in tourism industry.’ Kiara went to Diya and asked her to get ready. But Diya was too tired and decided to skip dining outside. So Rishaan and Kiara headed for the dinner. ‘This is so perfect! I wish Diya would have joined us. Rishaan, she is quite reserved and doesn’t mix with people easily, she is an introvert. I hope you both get along well during the trip. This is the sole purpose of bringing you both here. Bringing in the new year is a mere excuse. I just want my childhood best friend and boyfriend to gel with each other nicely’ Kiara said. ‘I ‘ll try my best to not disappoint you, Milady’ laughed Rishaan.  Rishaan and Kiara were dating for almost an year. Kiara had found her soul mate in him. Rishaan wasn’t as wealthy as Kiara, his dad was a small time cloth merchant, but he had a very attractive personality and a genuine nature. They both had met at a club in Mumbai. Both being frequent visitors in that club, their interactions increased which grew into friendship and blossomed into love. Rishaan had also managed to impress Mr. Raheja with his strong work ethics, genuineness and integrity and he employed him as an assistant manager in the Mumbai zone. The post of manager was enjoyed by Diya’s  father. He was one of the few trusted employees of Mr. Raheja and had family like relations with him. Kiara and Diya had grown up together and were childhood best friends. They studied together till high school and after that Kiara went abroad to complete her MBA while Diya continued her studies in a SoBo college.

‘ Kiara, my family wants me to settle down well before tying the knots with you. So I guess we will have to wait for 2-3 years before taking this propinquity further’ said Rishaan hesitantly. Kiara held his hand and assured him, ‘ Rishaan, I am not in a hurry for a nuptial bond, your love for me is chaste and I don’t need any marital agreement to ensure this. I am ready to wait. There was something about Kiara that always casted a spell on Rishaan. He found it difficult to decide whether he was lucky to infiltrate in her life or not.

The itinerary for the next two days was well planned. It covered Anjuna, Vagator beaches and  the clubs of Baga and the river and casino cruises in old Goa. And much to Kiara’s delight, Diya started opening up with Rishaan. Though they didn’t converse much, the awkwardness between them was disappearing. But Kiara failed to notice that there was an unusual chemistry between Diya and Rishaan. Without conversing much, they understood what the other person wanted to say, something which is uncommon for people who have met each other only a month ago. But with New Year’s eve only 12 hours away, one can’t blame her for being so absent-minded.

The two days tight schedule had dog-tired Kiara and it just took a glass of wine to make her hit the hay. But Rishaan couldn’t sleep, tomorrow was the  D-day, which would change the life of all the three forever. He felt restless and went to Diya’s suite, she was awake too, much to his relief. ‘Of course, I ‘ll be awake. I haven’t forgotten the purpose for which we have come to Goa, unlike you. You are too busy enjoying the dalliance with your ladylove. I had to make arrangements for everything alone. She has swept you off your feet, hasn’t she?’

‘You are being unreasonably rude, Diya. It was you, who wanted me to date her, much against my wish.’

‘it was only so that we could carry on with our plans smoothly but you took this drama a tad too seriously. I never asked you to exchange rings and plan your future with her. I saw how she held your hand in the flight.’

‘ Everything happened in a flow, I had no control over certain things.’

‘Right, you don’t have any control over your heart. Otherwise you wouldn’t love two girls at the same time!’ Diya was very furious.

‘I haven’t come here to argue, tomorrow is New Year’s eve, what is the plan of action?’

‘I am very miffed right now Rishaan, everything has been arranged, I ‘ll talk to you tomorrow.’

Finally, the last morning of 2015 arrived. Kiara was excited  as she was going to host the new year party in her hotel for the first time. This Raheja scion was ready to step in  her dad’s shoes soon. Diya was happy as well as restless. Finally the most awaited day had arrived. She had put everything at stake- her love, friendship to make the plan work. Rishaan loved Diya more than his life. And it was the result of this blind love that he was ready to go to any extent for her. They had met each other during a trek  3 years back and fell in love instantly. It was a clandestine affair as Diya’s father was against the love phenomenon. She had hidden it even from her childhood best friend Kiara. She messaged  Rishaan to gear up for today as they have to execute the plan in the evening. Rishaan had mixed feelings. He didn’t know whether he should be happy or grieve because this fake love drama would end today. He knew from the start that his relationship with Kiara was merely a drama and part of the plan. But his heart refused to oblige, it had fallen strongly for Kiara.

The New Year’s celebrations started in the evening.  A hooded figure approached Diya and passed a file to her. The papers were ready! Just one sign from Kiara and 70% of Raheja industries share will go in the hands of Diya and Rishaan. She signalled  Rishaan to bring Kiara in her suite. Rishaan brought her in the suite under the pretext of giving her a surprise and she readily followed him. As soon as she entered the room, two hooded men held her captive and Diya appeared before her. ‘What the hell is going on Diya? Why have you held me captive?’ Kiara shouted. ‘We won’t cause you any harm if you sign on these papers Kiara.’ Diya explained. ‘What? Which papers?’ Kiara didn’t understand anything. ‘These are the property papers Kiara and it is written over here that you are willing to transfer 70% of your shares to Rishaan and me.’

‘Rishaan!! You too!? Even you are involved with her? How??’ Diya laughed looking at Kiara’s perplexed face and clarified, ‘Rishaan is my boyfriend and not yours, baby. We have been dating for the last 3 years.  He double-dated me with you but he had my consent. I had asked him to go and romance you and he can go to any extent for me. Because he loves me and not you.’ Kiara couldn’t understand initially but things started making sense later on. Her entire world came tumbling down. The two most important people of her life backstabbed her. She didn’t know how to react. She hated herself for being so vulnerable and getting stuck in their trap. Rishaan didn’t say a word. He wasn’t a thug, so wasn’t Diya but her ambitions had blinded her. She couldn’t distinguish between good and bad.

The hotel security sensed some foul play as the CC TV cameras of the top floor weren’t working. They informed the manager and they came on the top floor to check if everything is alright. They knocked the door of Kiara’s suite and Kiara immediately cried for help. The guards banged open the door, the manager sensed the situation and asked his guards to capture Diya, Rishaan and their men. The tables had turned now. The ball was in Kiara’s court. It was the time to clear all the doubts. She asked Diya the reason why she had turned so bitter and nurtured so much hatred for her.

‘My jealousy began right from the childhood’, started Diya, ‘ Wherever we used to go,  people only noticed you, I used to get obscured under the brightness of Raheja surname. You were a big daddy’s spoilt child and I came from a humble background. My dad was just a mere employee in your giant Raheja empire. We were equally talented, in fact I used to outshine you in certain aspects. But still I was always addressed beneath you. And this had lower my self esteem to a great extent. And I couldn’t tolerate being the second best. And later on when you went abroad, I rediscovered myself. I found there was so much to me and people finally started noticing me and praising my good looks and talent.  There wasn’t any Kiara to lower my worth. I met Rishaan, we fell in love. Those 3 years were the blissful phase of my life. We planned to settle down but my ambitions didn’t co-operate, my mind wasn’t ready to live a middle-class life of an employee. Hence, I fetched a plan. I learnt that you are coming back and uncle has transferred all his property in your name as your 24th birthday gift. So I decided to use Rishaan to get all the details of the company and later on usurp your wealthy possessions. And we had to execute this plan here in Goa. This was an ideal opportunity.’

image

Kiara looked at Rishaan in disgust. The same face which was the reason for her happiness, which reflected humbleness and innocence, appeared like a hound who was hungry for money. Rishaan stood their quietly not daring to look at Kiara. ‘Rishaan didn’t want to join me in this plan initially’, continued Diya, ‘ but I emotionally blackmailed him and he had to oblige.’ Kiara was totally shattered. She was completely unaware of this jealousy and envy that was brewing in Diya. She had loved her liked her own sister and this is what she had got in return.  Kiara reasoned with her that she never wanted Diya to feel less important or worthless. She had already planned to give 40% of her shares to Diya as a token of her friendship and also because she thought Diya deserved it. This statement stunned Diya and she looked at Kiara with baffled eyes. Kiara further added that she would have willingly given half of her property to Diya if she would have asked for it. Because, Diya was the only person with whom Kiara opened fully and found solace. Kiara reminisced their childhood memories which broke Diya. She realized that she had committed an eternal crime by breaking her best friend’s trust.  Rishaan watched all this in dismay. Diya approached him and said, ‘Rishaan I have sensed your affection towards Kiara. I know I can’t make up for my mistakes. I am very guilty. But the only way I can lessen the burden of my crime would be if I free you from the shackles of my love. You can go to Kiara and this time lovr her without any restrictions or bondage. ‘

‘No, Diya’, Kiara protested, ‘ you may have forgotten the duties of a best friend but I haven’t. I can’t be with a guy who is your center of universe. Rishaan I don’t know what to say but I can’t have you back. Please take Diya away from my sight and keep her happy. I ‘ll try to forget all the wonderful memories we created together. I ‘ll ‘ and she hugged him. And once again Kiara didn’t fail to mesmerize Rishaan.

‘Can I have an opinion of my own? At least now? Why am I being shuffled between the two of you as if I am a toy? Can I decide about my life?’ argued Rishaan. Kiara and Diya nodded. He abided by the quote, “If you love two people at the same time, choose the second. Because if you really loved the first one, you wouldn’t have fallen for the second.” And chose Kiara over Diya. Yet again Kiara outshined Diya. Diya finally realized that she didn’t lag behind Kiara because she was a Raheja and born with a silver spoon in her mouth. But because she had a heart of gold unlike her. Kiara won people’s heart wherever she went because of her nature and Diya’s snooty and lousy behavior casted a bad impression of her. At last she came out of the disillusion which had shrouded her senses.

Rishaan and Kiara were finally united, without the burden of adulterated feelings.  Diya learnt a lesson for lifetime- ‘ the love of family and administration of friends is much more important than wealth.’ The New Year indeed marked a new beginning in their lives.

The Elastics

She willed herself to not check her phone to see if he had replied. It had
been about three days now. She hated that she was constantly checking his ‘last seen at’ status and yes, he had logged in just five minutes ago. Yet she couldn’t stop herself. This sinking feeling to find absolutely no communication from him was becoming unbearable, almost torturous.
And then, just as she sat down in her chair, her phone vibrated. With her heart thudding in her ear, she unlocked her phone and stared at the screen. Finally! It was his message.
But when she opened it and read it, she nearly stopped breathing. She didn’t know if he was joking or not. What was this? A violent rage gushed in her veins. She wanted to type so many things but somehow she gathered courage and with trembling fingers typed three words, no… these weren’t those three magical words which lead to the commencement of romantic relationships. Priyanka typed ‘Okay, fine. Goodbye.’ And pressed the send button. With this Varun and Priyanka’s three year old brief romance terminated.
After whatever occurred on that fateful day, how could she expect him to carry this relationship further. ‘ I can’t take this anymore, I have thought really hard on this for the last three days and finally came to a conclusion. Once trust is broken, it cannot be regained. And a relationship without trust is a nugatory. So I am forced to call off this relationship. Thanks to your doings. Goodbye’. Didn’t his fingers tremble, his heart beats fasten or eyes become watery while typing this? How could he end this relationship so easily? And even worse, how can he talk about ‘trust’? Did he even know the meaning of trust, loyalty and commitment, a year back?
However, she cannot enshroud her mistakes by inculpating him. She had committed a mistake after all. ‘To err is human’  agreed, but he wasn’t any divine figure to forgive her. So wasn’t she, but she had forgiven his  mistakes many times only because she valued this relationship more. A million thoughts had occupied her mind. She knew about the consequences of her deeds. But she was too tired to care. Strangely, how our hearts still get hurt by the things we had already seen coming! She could have reasoned, argued, pleaded with him or done whatever it required to save this relationship. To prevent him from leaving her in agony. But ‘If you have to convince someone to stay with you, then they have already left.’ She had read this . Her amour propre was too big to bend now.
And Priyanka was hurt to think that it just took three days to break a three year old propinquity. She reminisced the day her ‘fairytale’ romance had started. A ‘fairytale’ indeed! Because in reality, a Don Juan of the college doesn’t fall for an average looking highbrow. Varun had swept many girls of his college off their feet. His jaws appeared to be chiseled by Michelangelo himself! He was tall and had a good physique. And also he was smooth with his words. With his irresistible charm, this adonic  Varun became very popular in the college and Priyanka, well, she was well-known by the professors, thanks to her nerdy traits!
They came together due to a group project. It was love-at-first-sight for Priyanka. She hoped for cadging her desi Mr. Darcy anyhow. Her biggest opportunity came during the final exams. Varun wasn’t someone who used to attend lectures regularly. Therefore he needed Priyanka’s assistance in studies. With this, their interaction increased and they started spending more and more time with each other, which in turn, increased their affinity . On the last day of the exams, Priyanka proposed to Varun abruptly. 12th March 2012- this day is highlighted in her memory forever. She knew that if she didn’t approach him today, she won’t get to see him for 2-3 months, due to summer vacations. Hence, she went to him and proposed to him out of the blue. Varun was taken aback by this sudden advancement by Priyanka. He, too, liked her but ‘relationship’ as a word was scary for a Casanova like him. However, he couldn’t hurt her. Hence, he accepted her proposal and their love story began. But Varun made it very clear to her that he cannot guarantee any loyalty or commitment from his side. All this didn’t hinder Priyanka from loving him. She was confident about her love that it will change him and he will settle down with her someday.

image

So things went on smoothly, at least from Varun’s perception, for Priyanka it was very perplexing and an obscured experience.  He was true to his words. He didn’t show any signs of settling down with Priyanka. His debauchery went on with the same pace as it used to be when he was single. Priyanka wasn’t unaware of this but she couldn’t stop herself from loving him. Her feelings for him were so strong that even a  gazillion mistakes from his side won’t dwindle it. But her efforts and patience didn’t go in vain. Varun slowly and steadily started realizing his mistakes and got bored of his lifestyle. After indulging in many flings Varun realized that Priyanka is a keeper.
He knew that she ‘ll always stick around with him and hold him close. And the age of infidelity had passed, it was time for them to think seriously about setting down with a compatible partner. And he wouldn’t find anyone better than Priyanka. So he decided to emend his mistakes and make up for the lost time and love Priyanka. She had stuck with him despite of so many problems and forgiven his deeds. Varun was ashamed of himself. But Priyanka was no saint, in all these circumstances she was tremendously wrecked and even forgot how to smile genuinely. She had never given so much of herself to someone before. She had lost herself in loving Varun. And he returned her love with cheating and lies. She was just never good enough for him. Her simple nature didn’t suit Varun’s charisma. She was tired of constantly coming second to dozens of other girls. She was sailing alone in their so-called ocean of love.
She was weary of everything and wanted to give up on everything. But hope infiltrated in her life, disguised as Rahul. Rahul was one of the closest friends of Varun and Priyanka. They all studied in the same institute. He had observed Varun and Priyanka’s relationship closely. He had seen the ups and downs they had undergone and he even tried to intervene many times. Varun didn’t like his indulgence though. Rahul even tried to make Varun fathom that his behavior was making Priyanka suffer. But all his advices fell in deaf ears. So instead of knocking some sense in Varun, Rahul tried to console Priyanka. He made sure that he is always available to her, whenever she experienced emotional breakdowns. Priyanka found solace in Rahul. His company made her happy, because he had become her strongest support. She always counted on him whenever she was in distress. He was the reason why Varun and Priyanka’s  relationship was still going on. Otherwise, Priyanka would have given up long back, Varun had tested her patience and endurance to the limits.
But after two years, Varun finally cognized his peccadilloes. And he started giving his time and attention to Priyanka, she finally got everything she had longed for. However all his love, attention, time were irrelevant for her now. Things were changing, but for good or bad nobody knew. Rahul’s proximity to Priyanka and Varun’s negligence towards her was instrumental in making Priyanka fall for Rahul. She didn’t even realize it but Rahul’s soothing behavior towards her and the way he treated her infatuated her. But Varun being her first love, she couldn’t leave him. So she decided to adopt a middle path. Rahul and Priyanka started dating secretly. Her brain had completely lost sense in dealing with so much pain that she didn’t mind cheating on Varun.

image

Can this even be called a relationship? Infidelity comes so easily nowadays. With the advent of so many social networking sites and advanced privacy settings, it’s easier to indulge in more than one relationship at a time. Today’s generation takes relationships so casually. Relationships are never like a bed of roses. It is like a battle which  couples  have to fight everyday and only the strongest pair survives. Cheating and perfidy is the easier path rather than fighting for it and enduring all the sufferings to make it last. The word ‘forever’ is now possible only in fairytales. In reality, it’s a big lie. How scary!
Rahul and Priyanka’s cloak-and-dagger romance was going on smoothly. And on the other hand, Varun had started showering his attention and love on her. Priyanka smoothly managed to fool him because Varun wasn’t very clingy, he believed in giving his partner some space and more than that, he trusted her very much that he was never suspicious of Priyanka’s behavior or actions. But, truth has a habit of coming out. Priyanka had visited Varun’s place for dinner on that fateful day. And while Varun was busy playing the perfect host and was making arrangement for dinner,  Rahul had called Priyanka over the cell phone and she was conversing with him. Varun accidentally eavesdropped their conversation and got to know about Rahul and Priyanka’s clandestine fling!
He didn’t believe his ears initially,  But after confronting Priyanka he found out what was going on behind his back for the past one year. He was aghast and completely shattered. His world came crashing down. He had no idea about how to react, his body felt numb. He was backstabbed by his love. The sense of security he had from Priyanka was dilapidated. Seeing Varun’s plight, Priyanka felt ashamed of her deeds. She approached him and tried to talk, but Varun was in mood to listen to her. He just asked her to disappear from his sight, Priyanka had to obey him. With a heavy heart, she left him on his own. She came back to her place and sent him a text message, ‘ I know you can’t forgive me for whatever I have done, I don’t even expect it. But I just want you to understand my situation, what compelled me to cheat and after considering everything, whatever decision you ‘ll take, I ‘ll accept it and abide by it. Goodnight, take care.’

image

The message got delivered but he didn’t reply and after three days he messages her to call off this relationship!! How could he break up over text messages? He could have met her or called her for this, at least for the sake of the time they have spent together. It wasn’t futile, the entire relationship wasn’t futile. It’s only after Varun left her, she realized the severity of the loss. He was the center of her universe. This was even worse than being bereaved. Bereavement kills hope, here she could still hope of having him back in her life, but it was pointless. This made her restless. She didn’t know what to do, so she called her support-system, Rahul and told him everything. Rahul had strong feelings for Priyanka, but he knew that falling for her will be in vain because she wouldn’t leave Varun for anyone. He was her life. With an aching heart, he suggested to Priyanka to put in efforts to get him back. But Priyanka’s self esteem was everything for her, she wouldn’t go and beg to him. If he valued her and the relationship more, he would have forgiven her, just as she had always. Nothing lasts forever, she had seen even the strongest of couples getting estranged and in their comparison, Varun and Priyanka stood nowhere.
Their relationship was like the ‘laws of the magnetic field’- Opposite poles attract and like poles repel. Till the time, they had opposite traits, they were together. But with Priyanka cheating on Varun, the differences in them were bridged, they both fell in the same category, having the same traits, so they were bound to part ways. Priyanka knew she won’t be able to forget Varun ever and this relationship wasn’t inefficacious. She had learnt a lot from it. Varun’s male ego won’t hinder him from his decision and she won’t take efforts to bridge the gap, that’s what her dignity demanded. No one was going to take any step, hence it ended. A ‘fairytale’ romance with  a sad conclusion, happy endings are too mainstream after all! Priyanka had always wondered what made Varun stick to her when he had so many better options, there were so many better-looking girls who used to linger around him. But he wanted to settle down only with Priyanka. Maybe because, she was a simple, loyal girl, who wouldn’t think of anyone else apart from Varun. Now that she had transcended from the only quality that had kept Varun with her, why would he want her back? Her mind was over thinking indeed!
She spent two-three weeks in desolation and distress. Untill Rahul knocked some sense into her and coerced her to start her life afresh. She was completely crippled by the changes in her life, but Rahul made sure that she rises again. He gave her resume for various job interviews.  She was single again after a long time. She decided to make the most of it and do things according to her whims and fancies. She lifted her broken pieces together and came back on track. After all for how long can one nurse these wounds.
Priyanka finally started focusing on her career. Days and months passed and she had learnt to live without him, she had stopped checking his ‘last seen at’ status and waiting for his messages. But one fine day, her phone vibrated, she thought it would be just any random message but when she saw the name on the screen, she nearly stopped breathing. This was unexpected. The message was from Varun! That wasn’t all, the message shocked her. ‘ Tried living without you but couldn’t. No one can ever love me as much as you do. We both have broken the rules of relationship but we can’t punish ourselves throughout our lives. I mustered great courage to ask you this- Can we start afresh?’ Good things come to you when you least expect it! Priyanka’s  joy knew no bounds, her life had come back to her. But she didn’t want to give in easily. She typed, ‘How can we start afresh? By forgetting the past?’ Varun’s reply melted her, how could she resist these words? ’No, not by forgetting but by correcting it! ;)’

Just like the elastic phenomenon- two ends of elastic only snap together if you pull them apart first, Disengagement  is sometimes necessary in bringing two lovers together forever.

Oh! So Indian (Diwali festive)

India is an unique country in various aspects. We proudly boast of rich cultural, monumental, religious heritage. And thus, we can gladly call our motherland as ‘A land of festivals.’ Isn’t it amazing that we Indians get to celebrate the maximum cultural and religious festivals in the world! (Incredible India☺.) We have festivals coming up after every 15 days on an average. Within a period of just three months, India has celebrated Raksha Bandhan, Ganesh Chaturthi, Navaratri and also the ‘baap’ of all festivals- Diwali!
Diwali is the darling festival of our country and it is certainly a huge affair. It is possibly the only festival that is celebrated with unparalleled grandeur and splendor throughout the country. Thcleanere is something positive about festivals. They change the ambience into a happy, pleasant one. It is like we are resurrected with new positive vibes. Everything is so gay and merry. People are full of exuberance, jubilation. The preparation  of Diwali are started well in advance. The primary focus being on cleaning and decorating the houses. It is believed that Goddess Laxmi visits only those houses which are neat and clean. Diwali is a very effective motivation for cleaning. We don’t need any PM’s persuasion to carry out the ‘Swacchta Abhyaan’ during Diwali. Well, to be brutally honest, I really abhor this. Yes, I know mom you ‘ll call me ‘a lazy girl’ ( But this is hereditary 😂)

Okay so after a really rigorous and hardcore session of cleaning, people decorate their houses with lights, diyas, colourful rangolis, flowers. The entire country is decorated like a bride. Every house, school, shop, office is festooned with lightings. And it is such a pleasant treat to one’s eyes! Diwali is not just a festival, it is a melange of myriad exciting activities like shopping(a lot of shopping), preparing snacks and gorging on them without worrying about calories. Yes, you don’t cut down on sweets during Diwali! People don’t mind working out some extra hours in gym post- Diwali. But no compromise in devouring mithais and farsaans. Another speciality of Diwali is – crackers! Traditionally, they were burst to scare, ward off evil and ghoul spirits. There are a lot of dubious and obscure opinions about the usage of crackers. They aren’t environment- friendly, kid friendly, animal friendly. And the scenario is changing, due to various awareness drives the usage of crackers is declining. People have become aware, of course leaving some ignorant, boorish set of people…No! I won’t abuse, I should not abuse. (Maintain the status quo, Apoorvi)

Moving on… As I was saying festivals involve meeting family and friends spending time with them. As everything is undergoing a change, this has to change too. We the ‘large family structure affected era’ don’t have time to visit the long circle of friends and relatives. But never mind, technology always comes to the rescue. Our smartphones have managed to bridge all the obstacles, quandary surrounding the busy, tight-schedule lifestyle. Previously, a lot of people used to hug and meet, greet each other. Now all this is done virtually. And how easily  we have accustomed ourselves to this change. I still remember when I was a little child,my house used to be packed with guests and relatives during this particular time. Now inboxes are packed with greetings- progress done indeed!
The way of celebrating this beloved festival has changed drastically over the years but the basic elements remain unchanged and undeterred. The Laxmi-pujan, wearing new clothes, decorations, increasing calories all this remains unchanged, unaltered thankfully.🎊 One more good thing to note is that- we have been constantly hearing that Indian youths are forgetting their roots and are becoming westernized. Well, all these aphorisms, platitudes can be put to rest during Diwali. Because this festival is equally popular among youths . Yes! They ditch their ‘western outfits’ and proudly don  traditional ones. The rising demand for anarkalis, sarees, traditional jhumkas, sherwanis are testimonial to this fact.
So, Diwali reminds our groping-in-the-dark youths about their strong and rich culture and traditions and resurrects them to the glorious heritage. Diwali is all goody-goody boisterous affair. It is an embodiment and manifestation of new beginning and good vibes. Okay so with this I put this blog to rest- hoping that the festive spirit doesn’t rest and lingers on…… A very happy Diwali all of you!
